AUDITIONING FOR THE THEATRE
Auditions are the chance for actors to show a director (or casting agent) who they are and that they are prepared to work on a performance project. It’s also the chance for the director to meet the actors and decide if they are right for the performance currently being cast.
What you probably want to know is – what is the director looking for? At an audition, the director is likely asking himself the following questions:
Will I like working with this person?
Does this actor have the skills he needs to play the part?
(And in professional theatre is often the question: Does she look the part?)
Obviously, were you auditioning, you would like the director to answer yes to any of these questions. You can check our
audition tips to help get a yes at your auditons.
AUDITIONING FOR THE PLAY GROUP THEATRE
The director at a PGT audition is looking for a readiness to work, learn and try new things. PGT is a training program and young actors join us at all levels of experience or inexperience. The director is not looking for a perfect performance at your audition.
At your audition, a PGT director is likely asking herself:
Do you show interest in acting and readiness to work on your skills?
Can you listen to and take direction (director’s choices on acting a scene or song)?
Are you ready for a performance project (or should you first continue with acting study)?
As far as auditions go, The Play Group auditions will be the most comfortable you’re likely to get. The staff is friendly and will do whatever they can to help you succeed.
For your audition, you will need to come prepared with:
a 1-2 minute song: bring sheet music so the accompanist can play piano for your audition.
Your song can be from any source – a musical, a Disney movie, even a tune from the radio (if you can find the sheet music).
a 1-2 minute monologue: one character speaking and sharing an idea. Also form any source – a play or musical, a movie, even a Shel Silverstein poem.
Need help finding a monologue or song?
Call (914) 946-4433 to schedule an audition day and time. Auditions are by appointment only and actors are auditioned individually. There is no audition necessary to register for classes. Auditions are required only for participation in the Actor Training Program, which includes participation in a performance project.
After your audition, you will be contacted about call-backs (more auditioning!) which are for casting actors in specific performance projects and likely specific roles.
Relax and enjoy your audition as much as possible. Remember that each audition is part of the process of learning to be an actor.
